Preparing for September: A Supply Educator's Guide

Preparing to head back to the classroom this September? Our handy Supply Educator’s Guide is filled with simple ideas to support your supply teaching journey.

Whilst the British weather may not have felt like summer over the last few weeks, September is just around the corner and for supply educators this means a wave of new and exciting opportunities. SupplyWell’s Flexible Workforce takes away the unpredictable nature of supply, but we understand a new academic year may still bring around uncertainty and the need for support.

Here we’re outlining key steps of how best to prepare for September to ensure you feel confident, organised and ready to go.

Building Your Network

It can be invaluable to network with other supply teachers so you can share experiences, resources and create a supportive community around you. Where better to do this than SupplyWell’s very own community; Teachers Matter. Here you will find plenty of support, tips and advice for teachers, TAs and cover supervisors. Sign up here and don’t forget to follow us over on Instagram as well.

Refresh Your Knowledge

Whether you have been in the classroom recently or you’re heading back for the first time this September in a couple of years, it is always important to refresh your knowledge and remind yourself of the curriculum aims for each year group. Twinkl has a lot of excellent free resources covering this topic (and many more!).

Behaviour Management Techniques

Working in supply, you may have previously moved continuously around schools and not stayed within the same MAT on a regular basis. But working as part of SupplyWell’s Flexible Workforce, you will work across a family of schools within a Multi Academy Trust – meaning you can feel more confident and aware of the behaviour policies implemented.

Don’t forget you can always speak with your Relationship Manager before your placement begins and they will help you to understand the school-wide behaviour policy.

Former school-leader, Joe Mangan, with over 10 years experience as a headteacher discusses more about behaviour management techniques in this blog.

Classroom Fillers

Sometimes you might find yourself with a few spare minutes at the beginning or end of a lesson that you need to fill. That’s where classroom fillers come in. From twenty questions, and memory games, to a quick-fire Pictionary. Here we have handpicked some resources to inspire you to create your own classroom fillers.
